Intermech Begins Construction of the Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility
August 1, 2007 - Intermech, Inc. begins field construction of mechanical systems today on the Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility (MFFF) being built at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site located near Aiken, SC. Intermech’s contract is with prime subcontractor, Baker Concrete Construction, Inc., and includes the installation of embedded piping spools and tanks integral to construction of the structural concrete for the 600,000 square foot facility.
With the start of construction operations on the MFFF, Intermech continues its role as a key solution provider of safety and non-safety related mechanical fabrication and construction solutions for nuclear related facilities belonging to the U.S. Department of Energy. The MFFF will fabricate commercial nuclear reactor fuel using surplus U.S. weapons-grade plutonium. Once the fuel is irradiated in existing commercial power reactors, the plutonium is no longer viable for use in nuclear weapons.
Preliminary numbers for construction of the 600,000 square foot facility include the incorporation of:
- 80 miles of process piping
- 1,500 tons of ductwork
- over 170,000 cubic yards of concrete
- 35,000 tons of reinforcing steel
- 23,000 instruments
- 500,000 linear feet of conduit
- 3,000,000 linear feet of power and control cable
