About Intermech

Intermech, Inc. (A Bahnson Holdings, Inc. Group Company) is a leading national mechanical contractor, fabricator and industrial general contractor specializing in process intensive industrial facilities and installations for specialized government projects.  Our core fabrication and installation work includes all classes and types of piping and HVAC systems. Intermech is headquartered in Winston-Salem, NC and currently has regional operation centers in Idaho Falls, ID and Richland, WA.    Local offices are operated as required to support the company’s major project work as it is being performed throughout the continental United States.

Intermech was incorporated in 1980 to support The Bahnson Company’s fabrication and construction activities for the nuclear power generation industry.  The Bahnson Co. was actively involved in the design, fabrication, installation and commissioning of air handling systems and/or ductwork systems for over 100 nuclear power plants that were constructed in the United States during the 1970’s and 1980’s.  The company developed and implemented its Nuclear Quality Assurance Program in the early 1970’s to support this work.  Major installations included the McGuire Nuclear Station, South Texas Project, Catawba Nuclear Station and Comanche Peak Nuclear Station projects, each exceeding $25 million at the time of contract.

After the current suspension of new nuclear plant construction in the United States, the company continued to support ongoing maintenance, commissioning and retrofit of HVAC systems in existing nuclear facilities.  These activities required that the existing NQA-1 programs be maintained and updated to meet new regulatory requirements.

In the 1990’s, Intermech was awarded the HVAC ductwork fabrication and installation contract for the Umatilla Chemical Demilitarization Facility in Hermiston, OR.  This multi-million dollar contract required demanding quality assurance programs, project execution and project management capabilities similar to those required in the nuclear industry.  Since the successful completion of that facility, Intermech has been awarded the safety critical HVAC systems for each additional chemical demilitarization project initiated by the U. S. Department of Defense to date.

Intermech expanded its operations and capabilities with the acquisition in 1999 of Thompson Mechanical Contractors, Inc. located in Richland, WA and the acquisition in 2001 of Atlas Mechanical and Industrial, LLC located in Idaho Falls, ID.  Both of these companies were leaders in their respective geographical markets and provided Intermech with additional key skillsets and experienced personnel in the areas of mechanical construction, fabrication and industrial general construction at the time of acquisition.  The personnel and resources of both Atlas and Thompson have been fully integrated into Intermech and support the company’s national operations as required.

Today, Intermech continues to pursue contracts for those projects requiring the highest levels of quality assurance, project management capabilities, safety programs and financial capability.  These projects include work for the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Defense, commercial nuclear facilities and private industrial customers covering a broad range of industries.  With over 25 years of successful experience in these demanding industries, our commitment is to remain “best in class” in the areas of safety, quality, performance and total best value.
